Whew! This month’s Kids Night In Box was chock full of imaginary fun! The theme, “Just Imagine,” really allowed the twins to flex their creative muscles and have some fun in multi-faceted ways! We started out by reading the New York Times Bestseller, Not A Box, by Antoinette Portis. The book is very engaging and sets the tone for the kids to work their way through the activities contained in the box. Normally, I follow the suggested questions laid out in the monthly newsletter, but this time, the book lent itself to questions on each page that captivated my twins.

The box contained a cute little workbook that allowed the children to use Wikki Stix to create whatever their imagination could think up. Jake made a cool star and Lilah made glasses.

After our Wikki play, we laid the included story time cards out on our “stage” and each twin had a microphone. They each selected a card and told their own improvised story to correspond to the image on the card. Jake told a tale of an old man on a ship that was surrounded by pirates and how the “good guys” defeated the pirates. Lilah’s story was about a man on a boat who sailed to an island. We even had a sing-off with our microphones!

After our performances, we headed into our makeshift home gym where the kids selected from a stack of movement cards and performed the moves depicted on each card. Here they are doing a hot air balloon pose!

We then did some fine motor play with modeling clay, molding it into various shapes contained in the workbook. Finally, we followed the instructions contained in the newsletter to deconstruct the box and turn it into a racecar with the included wheels and rods. The twins said that reusing the box reminded them of the day before when they reused old Amazon delivery boxes to create a garbage truck.

In addition to all of these fun activities, the box contained snacks, such as Cheez-its, pretzels, and Welch’s fruit snacks. Unfortunately, when the kids got home from camp they were ravenous and devoured the snacks before we could use them to create pictures like the newsletter had instructed. Oops!

Overall, this was a very engaging and fun Kids Night In Box. The twins were attentive and truly enjoyed telling stories and partaking in all of the activities included in the box. It was a great way to spend the late afternoon, and a welcome distraction from the TV and iPads, which have been used a bit too much during these dog days of summer! We have been taking regular trips to the library, playing lots of board games, keeping our minds stimulated with fun worksheets, and doing lots of swimming to keep busy when we aren’t at day camp. But some days the heat is so extreme (hello, Florida summers!) that being a couch potato has won out to more vigorous activities. How are you keeping your kids busy this summer?
